How often should you detail a car in Monterey?
Coastal salt air, fog and pine sap change the answer considerably. A local detailer's honest, experience-based schedule for cars parked throughout Monterey County.
The coast sets the schedule, not the calendar
Generic advice suggests detailing your car twice a year. That figure originates in inland climates. A vehicle parked within a mile of Monterey Bay sits within salt-laden marine air every single night, and salt is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against paint and metal long after the fog has burned off.
In practice, we find coastal-parked cars need a maintenance wash roughly every three to four weeks and a full exterior decontamination with fresh wax every two to three months. Vehicles kept in a garage a few miles inland can extend that interval considerably.
Interiors follow your life, not the weather
Interior frequency has almost nothing to do with climate and everything to do with cargo. Beach sand, dogs, children, job-site dust and daily coffee all shorten the interval considerably. If you're vacuuming regularly and still noticing an odor, extraction is overdue.
A sensible rule of thumb: a full interior extraction once or twice a year, with a lighter maintenance interior detail between those visits if the vehicle works for a living.
Signs you're past due
Water sheets across the hood instead of beading into tight, confident drops. The paint feels faintly gritty beneath a clean hand. The carpet looks fine, yet the car smells warm and stale after sitting in the sun. Any one of these signals that the protection is gone and contamination is bonding to the surface.
If you would like a straight answer for your specific vehicle, call us and describe it. We would far rather tell you to wait a month than sell you a detail you don't yet need.
